Resources

There are many sites that offer information on the care of Donkeys. Please use caution when choosing sites to follow. Many sites (especially rescue sites and social media sites) contain a lot of personal beliefs with very little scientific evidence behind them. This information is often inaccurate and unfortunately quite often harmful. We urge you to only follow guideance well vetted and trusted sources.

There is a HUGE amount of reliable information about donkeys and donkey care available from The Donkey Sanctuary. Based in the UK, they are an organization entirely devoted to the health and welfare of donkeys. They have contributed more than any other organization to the veterinary understanding of donkeys and how they differ from horses and other equines. They have worked with us every year to produce and support the Internationals Welfare Symposium.

Presentations From Past Years

Since the first Donkey Welfare conference, in 2012 we've filmed many of the presentations from the annual Donkey Welfare Symposium. Much of this content is available through Vimeo and we even have the 2014 Conference available on DVD! Check them out HERE
Not only are these wonderful resources to add to your library, but they make wonderful gifts for anyone working with donkeys.

Nutrition

Adaptive to the arid desert landscape, donkeys have a difficult time processing the sugars/starches contained in many types of feed appropriate for horses. It's advisable, with rare exceptions, limit access to grazing on green grass, to feed moderate amounts of grass hay and for the donkey diet to be largely comprised of straw (barley and rye are the best).
